The launch of a full-fledged nuclear fuel cycle without the participation of the Russian Federation is at the discussion stage at the moment.

This was stated by Prime Minister Volodymyr Hroisman, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

“As for the statement by the Minister [of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak – ed.], it is just a perspective direction. As soon as this initiative is precisely outlined, we’ll discuss it in detail. That is why I think it’s only food for thought,” Hroisman said at a conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Earlier, Semerak suggested that Ukraine should launch a full-fledged nuclear cycle and reach the global level in handling its spent nuclear fuel without Russia’s participation.

“It is a matter of national security and economic feasibility. I do not see a reason why we have to pay Russia for burying nuclear fuel if we can safely produce it ourselves,” Semerak said.

He noted he would hold a debate on this issue with the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, Enerhoatom (national energy generating company), with possible involvement of donor countries. (censor.net)
